History: The storyline of Skies of Arcadia and information on Aika.
Personality: Aika owes a lot of her strengths to her upbringing. After being orphaned at a young age, she was raised by Dyne and his crew of Blue Rogues on Pirate Island. Growing up as a part of that community and working as part of Dyne's crew (she's been sailing since at least age 10, when she participated in the attempted rescue of Admiral Mendoza's ship), Aika was instilled with the values of responsibility, hard work, sticking to one's friends and crew, helping the less fortunate, as well as the strong sense of adventure that comes along with being an air pirate.
Aika's deep sense of loyalty towards her friends and her crew comes partly from having lost her parents so young. She knows what it's like to lose the people she needs most, and that makes her appreciate the surrogate family she's become a part of even more. She has pride in her status as a Blue Rogue, viewing both the Valuan Armarda on the one hand and Black Pirates on the other as similarly ruthless and evil, and contrasting them to the chaotic good lifestyle of the Blue Rogues. Another trait that Aika has inherited from her upbringing is her sense of responsibility. This is partly in how she conducts herself - as she tells Vigoro, "on Pirate Isle, where I was raised, we have a saying: a true man never makes excuses for his shortcomings" - and partly in her practical nature. She's not afraid to get her hands dirty, being used to all sorts of manual labor working on a ship, and she expects to have to work hard to get anywhere, not just steal the spoils of others' hard work as Black Pirates do. When Aika and Fina are stranded in Nasrad after the destruction of the Little Jack, Aika wastes no time in assuming the leadership role in Vyse's absence, looking after the less worldly Fina and securing lodging and employment for both of them. While air pirates have big dreams, Aika and Vyse recognise that there are many steps towards achieving that dream (treasure in Aika's case, exploration in Vyse's), and Aika has no problem in focusing on less glamorous short term goals, such as working as a waitress in order to earn enough money to buy a replacement ship. Her hard work ethic is matched by her honesty: she could have skipped town with the gold she earned from her temporary waitressing job rather than return to pay off the tab at the inn that she and Fina were given in good faith, but her honest nature and the need to live up to the image that the innkeeper got of her on first impression outweighs the financial gain that she would get by holding onto the gold, even if it meant that they would have been able to get a better ship and resume their search for both Vyse and the moon crystals faster. She also helps an injured man without a second thought at this point in the game, telling him that "helping people in distress is what Blue Rogues live for" - it is this action that gets Aika and Fina a treasure map and eventual reunion with Vyse, and it is down to Aika's compassion and her quick decision making to help others instead of take the road that is instrumental in their long term success rather than just doing what would be easier in the short term. The idea of reputation comes back into play later in the game, when a group of imposters are pretending to be Aika, Vyse and Fina, and using their status as famous air pirates to rob the people of Nasrad. It's not just the inconvenience that this causes them that causes Aika and the others to do something about their imposters - Aika's honour as a Blue Rogue, as well as her faith in herself and her friends, means that she can't stand to have people think that she's capable of robbing innocent people instead of just the Valuan Armarda's warships.
Aika's friendship with Vyse is undoubtedly the strongest in the game, giving the game its heart and showing facets of Aika's character through her history and interactions with Vyse. The two have been friends since childhood, and Aika was raised by Vyse's father Dyne and sees Vyse as the closest thing to family she has. They share a thirst for adventure, though Vyse is drawn to the idea of discovering new places, while Aika is excited by the prospect of treasure. This shows the vital difference between them: Vyse, while the natural leader, has more grand, abstract dreams, and Aika is more interested in the practical aspects of those dreams and how they can be profitable. Vyse tends to have a more romantic image of the life of piracy they lead generally, and Aika is not afraid to call him out on that, for instance telling him to grow up when he is excited about getting a bounty on his head. Another instance where Aika reprimands Vyse is in Maramba: when the gang first meet Admiral Belleza, disguised as the dancing girl Bellena, Vyse can't take his eyes off her. Aika is disgusted with him, annoyed that he's not listening to a word she's saying when she's discussing important practical matters such as where to get a new ship now that Drachma has abandoned them, as well as calling him out for "undressing her with his eyes". The question that any of this is jealousy on Aika's part is shot down later in the game: when they save Fina (again), Gilder asks Aika if she's jealous of the attention that Vyse is giving her. She replies, "I don't need to hear him say those things. I know he would do the same for me," reinforcing the bond that they have, that the depth of their friendship doesn't even need stating. The bond of their friendship, though, is something that weighs heavily on Aika every day. Aged 10, Vyse protected Aika from an attack by Piastol, stepping in front of the knife she threw and getting the scar under his eye in exchange for saving her life. Looking at Vyse and seeing his scar there is a daily reminder to Aika that Vyse protected her without hesitation and that she needs to be able to protect the people she cares about, too. She has never forgiven herself for endangering him like that, sealing the responsibility she feels toward him and cursing her own carelessness and stupidity.
Aika's love of treasure hunting is as much a product of her greed as her love of adventure. She overindulges when it comes to food, with Vyse remarking that out of all of them, Aika would especially like to join the feast in Yafutoma. She also has the philosophy of 'just a little bit': for instance when the party find the Great Bird in Ixa'taka, Aika notices a gem in its eye and says that "they won't miss a little, itty-bitty gem, would they?" She asks the same sort of question when they discover Spice Island, saying that "it would just be okay to take a little bit" despite Fina warning that they shouldn't disturb the island too much. Both of these incidents show that while Aika is not completely controlled by her greed, and she respects the cultures of the places they visit not to disturb them too much, she does feel that she's definitely entitled to *something* - whether for a souvenir, or for payment for working so hard to get to the places they visit. For Vyse, the experience of the journey itself is its own reward, but Aika definitely looks for the material. When the party go chasing after Daccat's treasure and find the treasure itself to be a sermon in friendship rather than gold, Aika is incredibly upset that there is no reward, moaning that "we ran around like idiots the whole time, and we're still poor!" while the rest of the party see the funny side. Aika does admit that the adventure, plus reuniting with Vyse on the way, is worth the journey, but she's still upset that there wasn't gold when they get back to Nasrad. Aika is not an incredibly selfish person - as mentioned above she stops to help out people that she doesn't even know, and sees this as a very important part of being a Blue Rogue - but she definitely thinks that she's entitled to her fair share.
Aika is not afraid to speak her mind, and doesn't think twice about doing so. While this is part of what makes her a strong person, and able to compete with the more male dominated world of air piracy, it can also make her offputting. Her straightfoward manner can sometimes come across as more than a little abrupt, and she's not above insulting people who annoy her, for example telling Lapen that he must have hatched from an egg and crawled out from under a rock. She is definitely the sort of person where 'what you see is what you get', and while that makes her get on splendidly with some people, the types of people that she doesn't gel with will generally be people who she can't understand at all, and it would take a lot of work from both parties to get them to a place where they can understand one another. Due to being such a plain speaking person, along with her love for food and treasure and her distinctive look and fashion sense, Aika is easy to insult or tease herself, though she will get as good as she gives in return, and not take it to heart unless the person is deliberately trying to be nasty, being used to that sort of teasing banter among her own friends and crew.
Aika is quite superstitious, for instance she is very afraid of ghosts (though she manages to overcome her fears if the incentive of treasure is there). She is also quite gullible and impressionable, having very distinct, inaccurate images in her mind of the cultures of the places they visit, which are fuelled by her overactive imagination. For instance, when Enrique mentions that the people of Yafutoma eat with sticks and are protected by scales, Aika is certain that they are giant fish-people who will try to eat them with spears rather than just normal people with a different culture. The rest of the party tolerates Aika's misunderstandings and bizarre imagination with a fond amusement, in the same way that they tolerate much about her, whether it's her blunt manner and overindulgence, or whether it's her bright, gawdy taste both in her clothing and in the ship she chose in Nasrad.
Aika is not very physically strong. Her weapon of choice is a boomerang, which allows her to deal damage from long range, protecting herself from brute force melee attacks while relying on agility and accuracy, which are definitely her strengths in combat. If faced with a foe in close combat on her own, she would not be in an advantageous position. However she could easily take out enemies at a distance, and her combat skillset make her work well as part of a team, balancing out a close quarters fighter and providing a distraction as well as speedy, long distance attacks.
In both her manner and her dress sense, Aika is pretty much a typical tomboy, which is partly a practicality in working on a ship, and partly from being close to Vyse and growing up in such a male profession. However she does have a more feminine side, for instance she retreats to her own house at the beginning of the game to freshen up (and take down her signature braids), and is upset when Vyse spies on her doing so, both from the act of spying itself and for the idea of him breaking into the more calm, feminine part of herself that she rarely gets to indulge in. Her softer side comes out through her interactions with Fina, whom she is very gentle towards and treats as a sister, and Fina brings out Aika's softer, more feminine side as much as Aika makes Fina stronger and more fitting into an air pirate crew.
Debt: At this point in the game, Aika has just witnessed Ramirez destroy the city of Nasrad, Vyse and Gilder have been locked up in the Grand Fortress, Fina has been separated from them and the Armarda are trying to force her to work with them, and Valua has the red and green moon crystals that they worked so hard to get. Aika would agree to work under the witch in exchange for her friends' safety and to have the moon crystals returned to them; particularly for Fina's safety, as she knows so little about how the world works and cannot really defend herself properly, especially against the sort of power that she's just seen Ramirez unleash.
Suitability: Aika would be very bothered that she's had to agree to be taken away from her world, her friends and her crew. As an air pirate she is used to exploring, used to freedom, and she will quickly feel trapped here. However, she will continually remind herself that this is what needs to be done, not only to rescue Vyse and Fina, but to safeguard the whole planet from Valua's plans. She has a strong sense of honour and will work hard at repaying her debt, appreciating the huge service that the Witch has done for her. That doesn't mean that she won't try to get everything she can out of it too, and bend the rules as much as she feels she can get away with.
